With the snow here to stay, winter enthusiasts are eager to get outdoors and enjoy the frosty air. Many of the local trail systems in the tri community are now ready for winter activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Opasquia Trails is ready for people to either take a leisurely winter hike or snowshoe down one of the trails and take in the majestic scenery and wildlife.
“For the winter time, the Opasquia Trails has a snowshoe trail open to the public,” said Opasquia Trails Committee Member Alan McLauchlan. “The trail goes from the Kelsey Watershed District Office and goes out onto the lake, then it goes into where the Boreal Forest Trail is going to be. The trail is about two kilometers in distance and there will be a variety of different scenery to take in.
“There will be tons of opportunities to see winter birds and different animal tracks. The lake scenery is great in terms of seeing the bull rushes in the snow and the way the wind sculpts the snow. Once you are in the Boreal Forest, it’s has amazing scenery and great for photographs. The trail will be well marked for the people who aren’t familiar with it.”
