No shortage of candidates
Local ratepayers will have some choices to make in next month’s municipal elections. Elections will be taking place in Grandview Municipality, the RM of Riding Mountain West and the Municipality of Roblin.
A plebiscite is being held in the Municipality of Roblin regarding angle vs. parallel parking on Main Street.

Fusion announces final five
Fusion Credit Union is in its second year of running the Community Infusion competition and has announced its “Final Five” contestants in the running.
Contestants from all over the area submitted applications and represented various business and commerce sectors in the region, with the number of applications being relatively similar to the first year’s competition.

Hometown hero
Former Roblinite Daryl Case was among a number of courageous Canadians – from private citizens to police officers and firefighters – to receive Decorations for Bravery at a ceremony in Ottawa, Sept. 9.
The medals were presented by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada. The ceremony was part of the program’s 50th anniversary commemorations.

ECCCC holds seventh annual Walk of Hop
Over the second weekend in September, the Expanding Community Cancer Care Committee held its seventh annual Walk of Hope in Russell raising $71,000 for the project.
With the announcement in May that the province would be kicking in ‘the difference’, it’s hoped that the need for another Walk of Hope is over.

Food bank opens for 30th season
Many people are faced with rising costs and just not earning a living wage to make ends meet. One community program has been providing assistance locally to ensure that no family in Roblin goes hungry.
The Roblin Food Bank has opened up for its 30th season after again closing for the summer months and continues to fulfill a need in the community.

WCG wraps up tour in Roblin
Westman Communications Group wrapped up its 2022 #ConnectingWestman Tour in Roblin Sept. 8 with a charity barbeque at the Parkway Co-op Food Store and an open house showcasing its products and services at the Drop-In Centre.
The highly successful tour of Westman communities – put on hiatus for two years because of the pandemic – included stops in Minnedosa, Dauphin, Neepawa and Roblin this year and raised more than $13,000 for local charities.

NWMC fosters GBV programs
Ever since the Covid pandemic, reports of Gender Based Violence (GBV) are on the rise and although the numbers are greatly increasing, the reality is that there are many more instances that are going unreported.
Statistics show that 64 per cent of women in Canada have experienced physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Indigenous women are 61 per cent more likely to experience some form of GBV before the age of 15.

More catalytic convertors stolen
There has also been an increase in stolen catalytic converters in the area. Please know that it is not just Roblin plagued with this problem. Here, police are working extended hours and are taking steps to apprehend the suspects.
If you have the option, please put your vehicles in a garage. If a garage is not an option, please keep the areas where your vehicles are well lit with lights and call police if you see anything suspicious.

Off to a good start at GLH
Goose Lake High Principal Kirk Wilson says while everyone is usually excited about the beginning of a new school year, things are a little different this year.
“What’s different is we’re very optimistic – and relieved – that we’re starting the year for the first time in two years without Covid being the central theme. That’s a pretty nice thing,” he said.
