MLAs go back to work

The Manitoba government was joined by members of the public and community leaders from across the province at the reading of the speech from the throne Tuesday, which outlines what Manitobans can expect from their government this new session..
The speech outlined the government’s plan to build on its progress over the past two years, with new commitments to improve health care, lower costs, create good jobs to grow the economy and keep communities safe.

Perogy and sausage wars

The Parkway Co-op held its third annual Perogies & Sausage cook-off Nov. 7 in all three of its member communities – Grandview, Roblin and Rossburn – inviting people to put their culinary skills to the test and hosting supper for the rest.
Judging the event in Roblin were Co-op director Richard Dereniwski, retired Co-op office manager Sandra Stephanow, and perogy connoisseur Andrew Sorochuk..

Angels, Raiders advance to provincials

Goose Lake High’s Angels and Raiders Varsity volleyball teams are heading to their respective provincials Nov. 27 to 29.
The girls AA championships take place at Prairie Mountain High School in Somerset while the boys AA provincials go at Major Pratt School in Russell.

Branch #24 hosts Remembrance Day service

Members of Roblin Branch #24 of the Royal Canadian Legion hosted the community’s Remembrance Day service Tuesday at the Community Centre to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to those who served their country during war time and in times of peace.
Goose Lake High principal Kirk Wilson did a great job as emcee and his daughter Maya offered a wonderful rendition of that famous poem “In Flanders Fields”. The Roblin Elementary School Choir under the direction of Rita Collins sang two selections – Light A Candle for Peace and All I Ever Wanted.

Can't afford winter tires?

As Manitobans pull their winter boots out of the closet and brace for another Prairie winter, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is reminding everyone that it is just as important to think about what your vehicle is using when in contact with snow and ice.
The MPI Winter Tire Program provides low-interest financing up to $2,000 to help Manitobans purchase winter tires.

Farmers offered a reward

The governments of Canada and Manitoba are introducing a new program that helps farmers adopt sustainable practices and save money. The program was announced Thursday by federal ag minister Heath MacDonald and his provincial counterpart Ron Kostyshyn.
Starting in the 2026 crop year, Manitoba farmers who plant perennial forage crops on marginal land will receive a 15 per cent discount on Forage Establishment Insurance (FEI) premiums.

Craft show held

It may have started out as just a “craft show” but the Roblin & District Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas market held Saturday has grown to encompass so much more than handmade toys and Christmas goodies. While there are still plenty of those to choose from, vendors include the most popular home-based businesses, garlic growers and even alternative health practitioners.

Vets' family shares stories

The family of three of the 30 World War II veterans honoured with banners on Roblin’s Main Street has shared their war time stories. The remembrances were submitted by Herb and Diane Lovas.
“It is great that they are putting memorial flags up on main street in Roblin to honour these people,” Lovas wrote in an e-mail. “Thinking a little story would go along with that.”

Watch for new 4-way stop

RCMP would like to bring your attention to some new stop signs in town. On 3rd Avenue South west and King street. What was only a stop sign for those going east and west, is now a 4–Way stop for everyone. Please be aware of these changes, and drive safely.
There were 36 calls for service in the Roblin area, for a total of 80 calls for service in the Prairie Mountain are in the last two weeks.

Budget a costly one: Poilievre

Opposition leader Peter Poilievre said the Liberals have introduced the most costly and largest budget deficit in history outside of COVID and that the cost of this Liberal budget will drive up the cost of food, housing, and everything else that Canadians buy.
He said the Prime Minister has broken every single promise he made just seven short months ago. He promised a $62 billion deficit; he delivered nearly an $80 billion deficit, $16 billion bigger than he promised and twice the size that his predecessor left behind.
