More for the Foundation

Last month was Endow Manitoba’s Giving Challenge, which runs for one week in the middle of November.

It gives community foundations across Manitoba a chance to collect donations and receive extra contributions from the Winnipeg Foundation and the Province of Manitoba, to help increase the amount each community foundation receives.

Vehicle check leads to drug charges

On Oct. 28, members pulled over a vehicle and located open liquor in the vehicle. The vehicle was searched further. Drug paraphernalia, cash, and drugs were located and seized.

Further test on the drugs showed that fentanyl was among the drugs seized. Two people were arrested and released with a first court appearance set for Jan. 18 in Roblin.

Larsen heading for Vegas again

Winning a world championship is never easy. In rodeo, it takes amazing athletic feats and a little bit of luck.

Orin Larsen has been close to claiming that Montana Silversmiths gold buckle. In 2019, he finished just behind titlist Clayton Biglow. Three years prior to that, he was third in the final world standings.

House brings entrepreneur home

When Melissa Taylor found out “Ted the Barber’s” house and detached barber shop were up for sale, she made an offer on the property as soon as she was able to.

Taylor had been living and working in Edmonton – Covid forced her to quit her eyebrow microblading business in Roblin and head out west to find a job – and had been looking for a way to “come home” and start up her shop again.

Throne speech outlines new plan

The Manitoba government, joined by community leaders from across the province, laid out its plan Tuesday to work together, strengthen health care, lower costs for families and grow the province’s low-carbon economy in the speech from the throne.

“Today is a new day in our province,” said Premier Wab Kinew.

Gambler funds new foundation

The Smellie Block in Russell – the home of Gambler First Nation’s admin offices – was the setting of a historic announcement Nov. 10 as Gambler First Nation announced a million-dollar donation to its newly inaugurated John James Tanner Legacy Foundation through the Potash and Agri Development Corporation of Manitoba.

The foundation was created to provide crucial educational, financial, social and psychological support to the children and families of missing and murdered indigenous women, girls, men, boys, two-spirited, and LBGTQIA individuals during times of crisis.

MOR passes new animal control bylaw

Council has passed a new bylaw to regulate and control animals in the urban and rural areas of the municipality.

The bylaw replaces legislation passed in 2015 and identifies and lists a number of restricted animals which are not permitted anywhere in the municipality.

Be kind to those in need

RCMP respond to several mental health calls, six mental health calls so far in the month of November, five in the month of October in the Roblin area. These calls are likely to go up during the holiday season.

If you see someone struggling, or sad, or depressed, have the tough, uncomfortable conversation with them. Be kind. Be caring. If you feel the person is a danger to themselves or someone else and they are not wanting to talk to a health care professional, call police immediately.

Task force's work comes to an end

The Manitoba government is taking steps to conclude the work of the Diagnostic and Surgical Recovery Task Force (DSRTF), redirecting focus and funding back to public health-care delivery with priority investments in public surgeries and diagnostics.

“Manitobans deserve to get surgeries and diagnostic tests right here in Manitoba and our public health system can and will deliver them,” said health minister Uzoma Asagwara.
