New bursary program for EMRs

The Manitoba government is helping rural municipalities recruit emergency medical responders (EMRs) through a new bursary program and in-community training programs to support rural emergency response services.
“We’ve heard loud and clear from local municipalities that they rely on EMRs to deliver front-line emergency services and keep people in the communities, but we know the previous government’s changes to training costs and required hours were getting in the way of recruiting EMRs and filling those critical gaps,” noted Premier Wab Kinew.

Local MP Dan Mazier voted against Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first federal budget.
Mazier criticizes the fact that it includes a $78 billion deficit and increases federal spending by $90 billion this year.

MOR holds ratepayer's meeting

There didn’t seem to be many bones of contention among attendees as the Municipality of Roblin (MOR) held its annual ratepayers’ meeting Nov. 17.
There were no lively and lengthy discussions about grader operations or talk about physician shortages but a few of the 18 ratepayers gathered at the Community Centre did raise some concerns.

PA Raiders coming for supper

Brayden Dube and his Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL are hitting the golf course this Thursday for supper and a meet and greet, if you’re so inclined.
Dube is the son of the club house manager Christie and her husband Garth and the team is on its way to Brandon for a game against the Wheaties on Friday.

Prints not human

RCMP were called out Nov. 17 after receiving a report of suspicious person as footprints left on property in the snow.
Footprints were determined to be from a bear.

MLAs go back to work

The Manitoba government was joined by members of the public and community leaders from across the province at the reading of the speech from the throne Tuesday, which outlines what Manitobans can expect from their government this new session..
The speech outlined the government’s plan to build on its progress over the past two years, with new commitments to improve health care, lower costs, create good jobs to grow the economy and keep communities safe.

Perogy and sausage wars

The Parkway Co-op held its third annual Perogies & Sausage cook-off Nov. 7 in all three of its member communities – Grandview, Roblin and Rossburn – inviting people to put their culinary skills to the test and hosting supper for the rest.
Judging the event in Roblin were Co-op director Richard Dereniwski, retired Co-op office manager Sandra Stephanow, and perogy connoisseur Andrew Sorochuk..

Angels, Raiders advance to provincials

Goose Lake High’s Angels and Raiders Varsity volleyball teams are heading to their respective provincials Nov. 27 to 29.
The girls AA championships take place at Prairie Mountain High School in Somerset while the boys AA provincials go at Major Pratt School in Russell.

Branch #24 hosts Remembrance Day service

Members of Roblin Branch #24 of the Royal Canadian Legion hosted the community’s Remembrance Day service Tuesday at the Community Centre to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to those who served their country during war time and in times of peace.
Goose Lake High principal Kirk Wilson did a great job as emcee and his daughter Maya offered a wonderful rendition of that famous poem “In Flanders Fields”. The Roblin Elementary School Choir under the direction of Rita Collins sang two selections – Light A Candle for Peace and All I Ever Wanted.
