After years of tireless advocacy of the Manitoba Métis Federation, the Premier of Manitoba and I will make a joint announcement that embodies the true spirit of reconciliation.
On Friday, July 19, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., Premier Wab Kinew will announce the return of the land that was unjustly taken from our people in the 1940’s. This act of reconciliation is a testament to the collective resilience, and unwavering spirit of the Red River Métis. This tragic part of our history saw a wave of despair and disbelief wash over the Métis of Ste. Madeleine as they witnessed the merciless burning of their homes, their sacred church dismantled, and their loyal dogs being cowardly shot. The heart-wrenching cries of children echoed through the air, mingling with the blaze of flames and smoke that consumed all their cherished belongings. The sight of their beloved community transformed into a desolate pasture for grazing cattle filled them with anger and resentment, as their way of life was sacrificed for the profit of others. This traumatic experience left the families of Ste. Madeleine homeless and shamed – and left an enduring scar on the hearts and minds of the Red River Métis people, forever shaping their identity and their struggle for recognition and justice.
For decades, your National Government has fought for justice - to reclaim what is rightfully ours, and this historic land return is a direct result of those efforts. It is a testament to the power of unity, perseverance, and our unwavering commitment to protect and defend our rights as Red River Métis Citizens. This government-to-government land transfer demonstrates the honour and respect that the Premier of Manitoba and his Cabinet have for our Nation. It is a powerful symbol of the progress we have made towards reconciliation and a brighter future for all Red River Métis people.
To the families of Ste. Madeleine, I want to thank you for placing your faith and loyalty in myself as your President and your National Government of the Red River Métis, in the pursuit of regaining the land unjustly taken. I eagerly await to receive you at the upcoming announcement. Your ancestors' resilience and strength in the face of adversity are an inspiration to us all, and I am honoured to share this important moment with you. I look forward to celebrating the enduring spirit of Ste. Madeleine together. I invite all Red River Métis Citizens to join us on July 19th as we celebrate this momentous occasion. Let us gather together to honour our ancestors, embrace our shared heritage, and reaffirm our commitment to building a stronger, more vibrant Red River Métis Nation. We Are Red River Métis!
