Winnipegosis Elementary School is a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school with approximately one hundred students. The school sits in the heart of the village of Winnipegosis and provides educational opportunities to students in Winnipegosis, Fork River, the Mossey River Municipality, and parts of Mountain Municipality. WES has a staff of eight teachers and 14 support staff working together to provide meaningful educational experiences for our students. The school offers a variety of activities to students both inside and outside of academics. Some of these include a fiddle program, numerous athletic opportunities, speech writing and public speaking, and Indigenous educational and traditional activities
Fiddle program All Grade 3 to 6 students participate in the fiddle program at WES. Students in Grades 7 and 8 who wish to continue fiddling have the option to remain in the program. We have a fiddle instructor come to the school once a week to deliver instruction to our students. Our program runs for eight months out of the school year and finishes with a community concert that has always been well attended and supported.
Athletics WES offers a wide range of athletic opportunities outside of regular physical education p r o g r a m i n g . Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in volleyball, basketball, badminton, soccer, and track and field. Versions of these activities are offered to students from Grades 3 to 8. We also hope to have our noon hour intramural program running again next year as well as starting a tiger cub program for our grade one to three students.
Speech writing, public speaking Every year at Winnipegosis, the students from Grades 4 to 8 participate in a speech writing and public speaking activity. Students write their own speeches and present them to their classmates and teacher. From there, students can advance into one of two grade level categories to present their speeches to the rest of the school, community members, and judges. Winners are decided and awards are presented to the top three speeches of each category.
Indigenous education, traditional activities WES has a deep commitment to moving in a positive direction towards Truth and R e c o n c i l i a t i o n . Students and staff participate in several activities throughout the year to gain knowledge of past Indigenous experiences and explore different ways we can help to move forward in a positive manner towards reconciliation. These activities included Orange Shirt Day activities with school feast, Divisional Pow Wow, National Indigenous Day activities, and dream catcher making. WES is very fortunate to have a strong parent council that is actively involved in numerous endeavors which provide our students with educational opportunities that wouldn’t be possible without their support. These include helping fund educational field trips, the purchase of literacy materials for classrooms, and student awards. WES is a small school with a big heart. Students and staff work together to provide a safe and caring learning environment for everyone while learning the necessary skills to successfully transition into the next phase of their educational journey.
