New tipping fees at the Roblin WDS

Municipality of Roblin council discussed a new bylaw setting new “tipping” fees at the Roblin Waste Disposal Site.

The fees for residents and non-residents are effective Aug. 27.

Andrews making her mark

Roblin has been the hometown for its fair share of successful journalists. There is another one who is making her mark in the field of Indigenous reporting.

Beverly Andrews was a former Roblin resident who left the community after graduating from high school and pursued an education in media.

Parkland Psychology thriving and growing

It has been five years since Parkland Psychology & Wellness opened its doors in Russell and owner Amy Wendell thought it would be a good time to re-introduce herself to the area.

“I hope to give you a sense of who I am, what my practice offers, and also shed light on other wonderful practitioners in our region,” she said. “At the end, I’ll talk about ways to navigate finding a psychologist/counsellor who could be a good fit for your needs.”

Smartphones banned in the classroom

Apart from some minor exemptions, the Manitoba government has banned cellphones in classrooms for the new school year to minimize distractions for students.

“We want young people to be able to focus in class so they can learn more and feel confident. We know cellphones can be a real distraction for students – studies show it can take up to 20 minutes for a child to refocus on what they were learning once distracted,” noted education minister Nello Altomare.

Fatal ATV accident under investigation

Russell RCMP continue to investigate an ATV accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Saskatchewan woman.

On Aug. 11 about 1:10 a.m., RCMP received a report of an off-road vehicle collision in the Kilman Cottage area, located in the RM of Riding Mountain West.Read more in this week’s Moments in Riding Mountain.

TTR hosts IOAD

Members of the Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve are once again joining hundreds of thousands of people across the globe to raise awareness of the overdose crisis.

The community is hosting another International Overdose Awareness Day celebration Friday, Aug. 30, with an education component, an awareness walk, a sharing circle or grieving moment for loved ones lost to drug overdose, and lunch.

Ag Society puts on a great show

The dedicated and hard working members of Roblin’s Agriculture Society have put on another great show.

While there were some doubts about what having the annual fair and rodeo on a long weekend – the same weekend as the  Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin no less – would do to attendance figures, more than 2,000 people came through the gates over the five days of events and attractions.

Karney tackles war in Ukraine in new doc

Former Roblinite, film producer and director, Sam Karney of Ice River Films, has just completed a film project that he was very personally drawn to and invested in.

The documentary, Voices of Freedom, brought together stories from survivors of the war in Ukraine combined with a local musician and composer’s music, to create something meaningful out of the darkness of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Everything you wanted to know about toads

It’s baby frog season, which means, if you are like me, that mowing the lawn has moved from a mere annoyance to an event fraught with tension.

I must be getting soft in my old age as I cringe at the thought of the lawn mower being a mobile guillotine, slicing up its amphibian victims indiscriminately.
