Niverville Nighthawks Head Coach Dwight Hirst has been named the head coach for Team Manitoba at the Western All-Star Challenge against the SJHL. This will take place Nov. 2-4 in Martensville, Sask. The two assistant coaches are Northern Manitoba Blizzard Head Coach and President of Hockey Operations, Josh Gratton, and Waywayseecappo Wolverines Head Coach and General Manager, Landyn Cochrane.
The showcase event includes a practice on the first night, a morning skate on the second day and the first game between the two leagues that evening.
The Showcase wraps up the next morning with an early 11:30 a.m. game before players and coaches disperse and go back to their teams.
•The Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries MJHL Stars of the week are headlined by Marek Miller from the Steinbach Pistons. The talented forward had four goals and four assists in two games last week. Seven of those eight points came against the Winnipeg Blues.
Next up is Stefan Kostin from the Selkirk Steelers. The netminder won both his starts, posting a 1.88 GAA and a.960 save percentage. That included stopping 59 shots in a 3-2 victory over the Portage Terriers.
The final winner is Carter Kingerski from the Winnipeg Monarchs. He scored once and added four helpers in two games.
•On the trade front, the Dauphin Kings shipped defenseman Beckham Garchinski to Pembroke of the CCHL for a player development fee (PDF). The Winnipeg native had a goal and an assist in two games for the Kings this year.
As well, the Niverville Nighthawks sent forward Thomas Harnett to Trenton of the OJHL for a PDF. Harnett, 19, had three assists in five games for the Nighthawks this year.
In a bit of a blockbuster, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines shipped forward Carter Haney to the Winnipeg Monarchs for forward Cam Alt and a PDF.
Haney, 18, moves back to his hometown of Winnipeg. At the time Haney was sitting tied for 12th in the league for scoring with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists). Alt, who had 12 goals and 20 assists last year with the Monarchs, has no points in eight games this year with the Pueblo Peppers of the NAHL.
In other moves, the Winnipeg Blues sent forward Carter Voll to Niagara of the OJHL for a PDF. Voll, from Victoria, B.C., had two assists in five games with the Blues.
The Dauphin Kings sent forward Kurtis Kinoshita to the Northern Manitoba Blizzard for forward Renat Nahnieiev. Kinoshita was held pointless in five games with the Kings this year but already collected one assist in his first game with the Blizzard. Nahnieiev, who is from the Ukraine, had three goals and 10 assists this year with the Blizzard. Perhaps he’ll find a home in Dauphin, known for its large Ukrainian population.
And finally, the Winnipeg Blues acquired forward Nash Nicolay from Weyburn of the SJHL for a PDF. The Rocky Mountain House, Alta., 18-year-old, had zero points in six games.
