A special evening

Thanks to the efforts of so many volunteers, A Dinner for Ukraine - a cooperative effort between Westman Immigration Services, the Rossburn Ukrainian Catholic Pastoral District and the Russell Silverton United Church - raised an astounding $90,000.

The money raised will go to the Canada -Ukraine Foundation to help directly with humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

One of the most touching parts of the stellar evening came when MC Len Derkach brought up his longtime friend Jim Cote - an elder and longtime council member from Waywayseecappo First Nation - who presented Olga Stronko and her two children with a Star Blanket from the First Nation. Like so many, Olga and her children have escaped the war in Ukraine and come to live in Binscarth.

As she waits, she’s with her brother Oleksandr Rusiaieva (also in the picture) his wife Nataliia and their baby daughter Sofia.

Star Blankets are among the highest honor in the indigenous culture given as a sign of respect, friendship and protection.

Craft breweries have taken off in Canada in a big way.

Between 2017 and 2018 the number of craft breweries in Canada increased by nearly 22 per cent.

That’s because, of course, the market is there for the speciality artisan beers. Over the last five years, the numbers show, sales have nearly doubled from one billion dollars in 2014 to $1.9 billion in 2018.

Today there’s upwards of 170 breweries across western Canada. And beer of all kinds – the simple to the complex, need hops – or, more accurately, the lupulin found inside.

That’s the stuff where the various flavours come from. Five or six years ago, Randy and Lyn Tye started thinking about what they might want to do as they approached retirement.

Randy had come to Manitoba more than 30 years ago from Ontario where he met Lyn, a farm girl from Russell (her maiden name is Thacker) with a love of horses, the outdoors and tending to anything that grows.

A night of unity, peace and understanding

“Music is a medicine and a time machine. It can transport you back to a time when all was good. Even in the darkest minutes, hours and days, it heals. Sometimes when I play or listen to music I laugh or cry but regardless which, I always feel better after.” - Bob Christie.

The last two years have been a tough go - and so many people worldwide, are in need of togetherness, and a renewed sense of community.

That’s exactly what Bob Christie is looking to address with an event he’s planning at Binscarth’s Third Avenue Theatre on April 30th. Pre-Covid, he said, he and his daughter Kianna performed at a fundraiser for MS in Esterhazy with a line-up of other musicians.

“That’s really where the idea came from,” Bob said. “It was so well received and I really wanted to do something similar here.”

But then, along came Covid and everything with it.

Prairie Classic returns in July

Like so many other events over the last two years, the Russell Lions Prairie Classic fell victim to the pandemic and had to be cancelled.

Last year, as Covid numbers dropped and the world was opening up just a little, it looked as if the derby might go ahead.

In order to comply with the ever-changing public health orders, rather than the customary July weekend, the date of 2021 derby was moved to a later date in August.

Just as event co-chairs Kevan McCarthy and Richie Davidson thought everything was figured out, came another blow.
