Shoppers duped by fake ads
With many people about to start holiday shopping, along with searching for that perfect gift comes finding deals or bargains on those top-demand items on peoples’ wish lists.
Stores started the whole Black Friday bonanza of deals, by copying our American counterparts, but now retailers have taken it to another level with the pre-Boxing Day sales strategy, which is get a deal before the big sale hits.

Silver Cross Mother has local roots
A Shell Valley girl has been chosen as Canada’s SIlver Cross Mother. Gloria Hooper nee Holopina of St. Claudwill be laying the wreath on behalf of all Canadian mothers who have lost children in military service to their nation at the National Remembrance Day service in Ottawa.
Her son, Sapper Christopher Holopina, died while serving in a peace keeping mission, Operation Alliance, in Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 4, 1996 when his troop was rushed in to help a group of British soldiers trapped in a mine field.

Keown brings home a Josie from Nashville
Ryan Keown’s dream of receiving an award on Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry stage has come true and it’s a moment in his life he will never forget.
Keown beat out seven other competitors in the Best Modern Country Song of the Year category at the ninth annual Josie Music Awards held Oct. 22.

Driving on closed roads is illegal
Did you know that it is now illegal to drive on the roads when they are closed?? Road conditions can be checked on 511 mobile app, by calling 511, by following MBGovRoads on Twitter or visiting the 511 website on line.
If you drive on a closed highway, you could face a charge of $298 for light vehicles (cars, trucks, SUVs, etc.) or $672 for heavy vehicles.

Goose Lake High holds Awards Day
Goose Lake High held its annual junior Awards Day Monday (Oct. 23) recognizing 75 students for their academic achievements during the 2022-23 school year.
“This is nice. We haven’t had this many parents in our gym for this ceremony as long as I can remember,” said MC and principal Kirk Wilson.

Rivers entrepreneur wins Fusion contest
A Rivers entrepreneur was declared the winner of Fusion Credit Union’s third annual Community Infusion live event held Oct. 18 in Brandon.
Danielle Pilatic of Danielle’s Studio 12 was declared the winner, receiving $20,000 in grant monies to help expand her business ideas.

Family battling red tape
Google Reviews has given Manitoba Student Aid a 1.4 star rating out five. The majority of the complaints stem from no one returning or answering phone calls, to the constant crashing or malfunctioning of the website, and the delay in receiving funds.

GLH hosts JV v-ballers
Goose Lake High’s Junior Varsity Angels and Raiders volleyball teams, both ranked #2 in the province, hosted their home tournaments Friday and Saturday and despite some weather-related delays, the tourney went off without a hitch.
The boys side featured teams from Warren, Russell, Swan Valley, Hamiota, Virden, Ebb & Flow and The Pas while girls teams from Swan Valley, Warren, Hamiota, Gilbert Plains and Killarney battled it out.

Kinew and cabinet sworn in
In a colourful and tradition-filled ceremony honouring the seven Indigenous nations in Manitoba, Premier Wab Kinew was sworn in Wednesday as premier of Manitoba, alongside the 14 other members of his cabinet.
“Manitobans have entrusted us with the great honour of leading our province and I do not take this responsibility lightly,” said Kinew.
