Long time rural WFP reporter pens new book

Fresh off his best seller, Lake Agassiz: The Rise and Demise of the World’s Greatest Lake, Bill Redekop returns to his Winnipeg Free Press roots mining the highways and byways of rural Manitoba.

In his sixth book, Don’t Fence Me In: True Stories about Rural Manitoba, Redekop chronicles rural life.

New hall rental rates in the works

First and second readings were given to a bylaw setting out new Community Centre rental rates at the regular Sept. 26 meeting of the council of the Municipality of Roblin.

Renting the hall for weddings, socials, reunions and cabarets will cost a base rate of $1,100 plus $55 GST and a $300 booking fee for a total of $1,455.

She's a rebel

Brooklyn Hramalak is making a name for herself in the world of post-secondary sports.

Hramalak had a successful first season playing with the University of Regina’s Cougars softball team, ending the season off by receiving Second All-Star Team for Right Field award and has now signed with the Regina Rebels of the newly formed Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League. .

Kinew meets with transition team

Manitoba premier-designate Wab Kinew got together on Thursday with his recently announced transition advisory team for what he called a productive and cooperative meeting.

Kinew said the team, established Oct. 6, has already made good progress in a very short time.

Oct. 11 was the United Nations’ International Day of the Girl celebrated to commemorate efforts and achievements by girls and women throughout the world.

Many women have pioneered the way for other women to succeed, especially in what have been deemed as male dominant fields of work or education.

PMH vaccine clinics beginning

Prairie Mountain Health’s (PMH) updated COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccine clinics will begin Monday, Oct. 23.

The free public clinics will run throughout the region until the end of November.

There’s a new business in town geared to provide outdoor equipment and rentals, without one having to travel out of town to look for them.

MDB Outdoors is offering a range of outdoor supplies ranging from lawn, garden, chainsaw, hunting supplies, as well as rental and repair services.

Firefighter of the Year named

The recipient of the firefighter of the year award, who was chosen by his fellow members of the Roblin Fire & Rescue department, is Lance Wohlgemuth.

Lance joined the Roblin Fire & Rescue Department in 2020 and proudly wears #20, which is the number his late father, Darrel Wohlgemuth wore from 2001 to 2019. Lance lives in Roblin with his wife, Nicole.

Attempted theft thwarted

About three in morning of Sept. 27, Roblin RCMP received a report that someone had opened the door to their truck but they were able to scare the person away. The incident happened TWO HOURS PRIOR to the call.

Members patrolled the area, but no one was located.

Breast screening pushed back

There have been posters up advertising BreastCheck Manitoba’s annual mobile breast check screening in many rural and northern Manitoba communities. Appointment dates were advertised to be scheduled for October, however that won’t be the case for every woman who has booked an appointment.

Numerous women have reported having their breast check screening appointment pushed back to dates in February and March of 2024.
