Manitoba Public Insurance locations become mask friendly
While provincial health orders are lifting mandatory mask usage as of Mar. 15, Manitoba Public Insurance will become mask-friendly - encouraging its customers to wear a mask when attending a service or claim centre.
However, they will no longer be mandatory.
In situations where distancing is not possible, such as road tests, oral knowledge test appointments and in-office cognitive assessments, MPI encourages customers to wear medical-grade masks. Again, it is not mandatory.
These changes also apply to Driver Z instructors and students for in-car lessons.
“While no longer a health order, we encourage customers to assess their health and personal risk and consider wearing a mask within an MPI facility,” said Satvir Jatana, chief customer officer with MPI.
Recently, MPI announced the suspension of its Third Party Pandemic policy. As a result, individuals will no longer be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test result for services or appointments where physical distancing or barriers are not possible, which previously included road tests and driver assessments.
The policy previously applied to all third-party individuals, including consultants, volunteers, board members and contractors, including students and instructors in the Driver Z program.
Customers attending any MPI location must continue to adhere to the following requirements, until further notice:
• While customers will again be permitted to wait for their service or appointment in our Service Centre waiting rooms, they will need to maintain social distancing requirements of six feet from staff and other customers.
• Answer pre-screening questions when receiving services or attending appointments. We also encourage customers to continue to also self-screen prior to attending our locations and if they have COVID-19 symptoms, please do not visit until they have subsided.
MPI’s plexiglass barriers will also remain in place to provide additional protection for staff and customers.
Co-op efforts result in rapid relief funds
When Dauphin Consumers Co-op launched a fund-raising effort in aid of the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal, they knew their patrons would be generous.
But just how quickly goals for the appeal, which saw the local co-operative match the first $5,000 donated, were reach surprised everyone.
Co-op began accepting donations for the appeal at its locations in Dauphin and Ste Rose, Mar. 8 and on Mar. 17 presented a cheque to the local Red Cross for $11,342.89, made up of $6,342.89 from customers and the $5,000 in matching funds. Donations were also being accepted for three days following the cheque presentation with all the funds also to be forwarded to the Red Cross.
Co-op general manager Lorne Eiffert said the thoughts and hearts of the entire organization are with the people of Ukraine. He added it is well known how strongly our communities come together in times of crisis.
“Co-ops were built to serve and support our communities,” Eiffert, said. “There are many members of our local community being directly impacted by this situation. We are pleased to support the Canadian Red Cross in providing relief efforts where it is needed.”
Together, Co-ops across Western Canada are donating $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal to aid relief efforts in Ukraine and impacted communities.
Co-ops have been a long-time partner of the Canadian Red Cross because of their commitment to support communities in times of crisis and contributing to this appeal is another way to support the broader global community during a difficult time.
Conflict adds uncertainty to already volatile markets
Editor’s note: The following was compiled from information provided from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Farm Credit Corporation.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is exacting a horrible cost in human terms and the war raging in Eastern Europe is likely to be one of the biggest influences on agricultural markets this year.
While neither Ukraine nor Russia are large scale trading partners with Canada when it comes to the agriculture and food sector, it is expected that trade with Ukraine will slow down and that sanctions imposed on Russia will make trade with that country more difficult.
In the last five years, Canada has exported an average of $65 million in agriculture and food products to Ukraine and imported about $33 million. When it comes to Russia, over the same period on average, Canada has exported $80 million and imported $93 million in ag and food products.
While grains and oilseeds markets were already unpredictable, the conflict is adding more volatility.

The Dauphin Clippers boys curling team fell short of its goal of a winning the title at provincials this past weekend in Hamiota.
The Clippers, represented by skip Colten Gawryluik, third Doug Mansell, second Ryder Chetyrbuk and lead Scott Gowar, opened the provincial competition with a 14-3 win over the Oak Park Raiders of Winnipeg.

That is where they met the Gimli Lakers, dropping a 7-4 decision.
The Clippers dropped to the B-side of the draw where they faced the Springfield Sabres, beating them 10-3.
This put Dauphin in the B-side semifinals against A-side champion Virden Golden Bears, who eliminated Dauphin with a 5-2 win.
Virden had won the A-side of the draw and had a chance to win the provincial crown with a win over Gimli in the B-side final, but the Lakers prevented that with a 6-3 win, setting up a winner-take-all A/B final, which Gimli won, 6-2.
In the girls provincials, the Carman Cougars won the A-side, beating the West Kildonan Wolverines, 7-4. They won the provincial title with a 7-3 win over the Swan Valley Tigers in the B-side final.

Arson investigation is underway
An investigation is underway into an intentionally set fire at a local apartment block over the weekend.
Shortly before 11 p.m., Mar. 5, Dauphin Fire Department (DFD) was dispatched to a report of fire alarms sounding at an apartment block in the south east area of the city.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met by occupants who had evacuated and were told there was a fire on the second floor of one of the units.
Crews entered the apartment and encountered thick smoke and extremely hot conditions.
They quickly knocked down the fire they found in a second floor hallway and proceeded to the bedrooms to search the areas and open windows to allow the smoke and heat to escape. They then found two other separate fires in one of the bedrooms.
The fires were intentionally set and the incident is being further investigated by DFD and the RCMP.
If anyone has any additional information related to this fire, they are asked to contact the Dauphin RCMP detachment at 204-622-5050.
